An Arizona 501 (c)(3) Non Profit Corporation
Tucson Concert Band eNewsletter, November 19, 2009

Tucson Concert Band
TCB was organized in 2004 as a Non-Profit Arizona Corporation.  Howard Beaver originally founded it in 1966 and during most of its time until 1996 was called the “Beavers Tucson Concert Band.”  You can read an excellent history of the TCB written by Liz Beaver on the Band’s website.  Also available on the website is the current Bylaws.

This newsletter will come out 4 times during each band performance year.  It
provides an opportunity for bandleaders to communicate with band members,
provide information about our band procedures and changes in the way we operate, update concert schedules, provide news about our members, changes in the band website, as well as news of any kind of information that will be useful to band members.  Occasionally we will include articles that remember and celebrate the history of the Tucson Concert Band, now in it’s 43rd year.

From Herschel Kreloff
Herschel will be absent on Thursday, December 10 and Lorelei will lead the rehearsal.  He announced that we will have a trumpet soloist at our March Crowder Hall Concert – Brittany Hendricks, a very talented young musician that recently performed with the Sonora Winds Band.  There is a bio for her posted on the TCB website – see calendar page.

TCB Board Meeting held 11/3/09
A meeting was held on Tuesday, November 3, 2009 with all present, except for Herschel Kreloff and Janice Wikgren.  The Minutes are not yet available but will be sent out to all band members when they are available.  The items covered include review of our finances, a discussion of use of our money, fundraising, critique of our October 22 concert, our future concert schedule, concert publicity, balancing use of our Teal Polo Shirts with our more formal red Jackets, and several other topics.  Some of the items covered in this newsletter are a result of these discussions.

Fundraising
The TCB has not had the influx of new monetary donations as we did last year at this time.  We are not presently experiencing financial stress, but do continue to count on such donations to be able to meet our financial needs and maintain a satisfactory level of reserve funds.  We come from a wide range of backgrounds and abilities to help the TCB financially and we all are making a significant contribution through our voluntary commitment to the band. We continue to welcome your generosity and will acknowledge gifts in our concert programs and on our website from those of you that feel you can do so.  You can make a gift of any dollar amount to the Band and will be viewed by the IRS as a charitable contribution. Checks should be made payable to the Tucson Concert Band and given to our Treasurer, Jim Van Brocklin or mailed to the Tucson Concert Band, c/o Jim Van Brocklin, 36959 Ribbonwood Ln, Tucson, AZ  85739.

You also can make an annual personal/family donation of property such as stocks or bonds, or other valuable items that can be sold by the Band.  You can also make a bequest to TCB in your will.  Individual bequests may be the best way to insure the future of our Band. You can see the 2009-2010 donors and review our Band’s policies and procedure on giving at our web page “Support the Band.”  You’ll note the different Recognition Levels, as well.  Personal giving is only one way to meet our financial needs.  We are also would be interested in any other ideas you might have, especially if you can offer your personal help in any area of fundraising, seeking grants, or other directions.  Speak to John Prokop or any member of the Band’s Board of Directors.

Five Steps to Being A Better Band Member
Liz Beaver recommended this article written by Wayne Bailey, Associate Director of Bands and Professor of Conducting at Arizona State University.  It appears in the latest issue of the ACB Journal (Association of Concert Bands) and is posted for a while on our Band web site. You can see it by going to:  ACB Article

TCB Publicity
Our band needs someone to handle the job of placing information about upcoming concerts in local newspapers and other media.  Not a big job, but very important - If you can do this, please talk to John Prokop.

Musicians Needed by Old Arizona Brass Band
The Old Arizona Brass Band still has openings for clarinet players and could use another drummer.   This band reenacts the military and civilian bands in Tucson in the late 1800’s.  Website is: http://oabb.homestead.com.

Tax Credit Donations to PVHS Band Program
Arizona permits a maximum donation of $400 for Married Couples filing jointly and $200 for Singles to activities in public schools. A tax credit is a dollar-for-dollar reduction in the actual tax owed to the State of Arizona. It reduces your tax liability by the amount you donate.   It is very important that you consider making a donation to the Palo Verde HS Band Program for this tax year prior to December 31, 2009.  The TCB receives use of our rehearsal space by the school district with the understanding that many members of this band will make donations to the Palo Verde band Program through this process, and if done properly it will not cost you a cent. Dave Hooker (Tuba) will once again be coordinating the donation process and assist band members in making their donations.  If Dave is not available, please give your tax credit donation to Liz Beaver.  In 2008 we, collectively, gave the Palo Verde Band more than $6,000.

TCB Website
The TCB Website will always have the latest information about our concert schedule and photos of the band and band personnel will regularly be added on the photo pages.  Band Members have access to Members Only Pages with a password made known to band members.  This section has the latest published roster of band members, as well as our updated Friendship Directory where you can get acquainted with your fellow band members.  Be sure to let George Libman know of any changes in your contact information or if you want to update your Friendship Directory information.

Band Coat Trivia
Jason Noffsinger (Percussion) provides the following information about the gold colored buttons on our Red TCB Coats:

On the buttons, one half of the button has the words 'Ne Obliviscaris' which is Latin for 'Forget Not' or ‘Do Not Forget’ and the Motto of the Chief of the Campbell Clan of Scotland.  Under these words there is a depiction of a boars head...which was a crest for a certain house of the Campbell Clan.  The other half the button has the Latin words 'Sans Peur' which means 'without fear.'  These words are above an often-used crest of a lion on its hind legs, another symbol of a certain house of the Campbell Clan.

2010 Holiday Concert
We can look forward to participating in an exciting joint concert with the Southern Arizona Women’s Chorus in December 2010.  John Arrison (Also Sax) is on the Board of the Chorus and is responsible for this arrangement.  From the Chorus’ Web Site “This December the chorus is putting on their “Harps & Angels” Concert, a collaboration of 14 harps and 70 angels. The University of Arizona's Harp Fusion and Southern Arizona Women's Chorus performs Benjamin Britten's "Ceremony of Carols", Latin, jazz, and traditional holiday pieces like you've never before heard them. Come experience Harps & Angels Friday. Dec. 11 at Eller Dance Theatre, University of Arizona Campus.”

Lorelei Conrad will be working with Chorus Director Terrie Ashbaugh in developing next year’s program.  As is the case this year, we can expect our concert next December to be performed on two separate days.

2009-2010 TCB Calendar

The Concerts expected for November and December have not worked out and have been dropped from the schedule.  Also we had a possible concert sponsored by the Southern Arizona Arts and Cultural Alliance (SAACA), formerly GOVAC.   Because of the Town of Oro Valley’s financial difficulties, and reduced use of Riverfront Park, for now it looks like this will not happen.  The following schedule is the best information we have today.  There is additional information on most concerts on the Calendar page of the TCB Web Site.
